Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

When I arrived at the Chestnut Hill estate, the grandeur of the house felt hollow. The rose petals from my wedding night were gone, but the heavy scent of crushed flowers seemed to linger in the air like a stain.
Diane Hale was sitting in the formal tea room, dressed in a black cardigan, looking fragile. On the table in front of her was a silver tea service and an old photo album.
"Thank you for coming, Michelle," Diane said, her voice trembling as she stood up to embrace me.
I hugged her gently, then took a seat across from her. "How are you feeling, Diane? I heard you were in the hospital."
"Just high blood pressure," she sighed, pouring tea with shaking hands. "Michelle... I am so terribly ashamed of my son. What he did to you on your wedding night was unforgivable. I gave you my mother's bracelet because I believed you were the best thing that ever happened to Ryan. You gave him class, stability, and love."
"I loved him, Diane," I said softly. "I really did."
"I know you did," she wept quietly. "And he ruined it. He let that vile, manipulative girl poison his mind."
"Chloe didn't force Ryan to act the way he did, Diane," I reminded her firmly. "Ryan made his own choices. He put her above me. He disrespects me, and he disrespects our family."
"I know," Diane sobbed. "I confronted him last night. I told him that if he doesn't fix this with you, I am removing him as the beneficiary of the Hale Family Trust."
Before I could reply, the heavy double doors of the tea room burst open.
Ryan stood in the doorway. He looked worse than ever. His tie was undone, his eyes bloodshot, his suit jacket wrinkled. But behind him, walking right into the private family residence, was Chloe Grant.
I stood up immediately, my body rigid with disdain.
"What is she doing here?" Diane snapped, her voice filled with sudden fury as she pointed a trembling finger at Chloe. "Ryan! How dare you bring that girl into my sight after what she caused?!"
"Mother, stop!" Ryan shouted, stepping into the room. "Chloe is here because she is the only person in my life who isn't trying to destroy me right now!"
Ryan turned his bloodshot eyes onto me, his face twisted in pure rage. "You sneaked around behind my back again, didn't you, Michelle? Julian Vance just called an emergency meeting of the audit committee! What did you do?!"
I stood tall, keeping my hands resting calmly on the back of my chair. "I didn't do anything, Ryan. I simply conducted a standard due-diligence review on your vendor contracts."
"Vendor contracts?" Ryan blinked, bewildered. "What are you talking about?"
"Ask your assistant," I said, shooting a cold glance at Chloe.
Chloe’s face drained of all color. She took a subtle step back toward the door. "Ryan... she's lying. She's just trying to turn you against me—"
"Aegis Logistics," I interrupted, my voice ringing out clearly in the grand room. "Fourteen million dollars in padded invoice payments over three years. Transferred directly into a private bank account in Zurich registered under the name Chloe Elizabeth Grant."
Ryan stared at me, then slowly turned his head to look at Chloe. "Aegis? Aegis is our primary logistics provider... Chloe, you recommended them to me three years ago..."
"Ryan, no! It's a setup!" Chloe shrieked, grabbing his arm desperately. "She fabricated those documents! She bought off the auditors! She wants to ruin us because she's bitter that you loved me more than her!"
"Check your phone, Ryan," I said calmly. "The SEC and the forensic audit team just flagged the accounts thirty minutes ago. Your CFO is probably trying to call you right now."
As if on cue, Ryan’s phone began buzzing violently in his pocket. He pulled it out with shaking hands. The caller ID flashed: CFO - URGENT.
Ryan answered the phone, pressing it to his ear. "Hello?... What?... Are you sure?"
As he listened to the voice on the other end, the color completely drained from Ryan's face. The phone slowly slipped from his fingers, clattering onto the marble floor.
He looked at Chloe as if seeing a monster for the first time.
"Fourteen million dollars?" Ryan whispered, his voice cracking with utter betrayal. "You... you were stealing from me? While I defended you to my wife? While I put you in my bed?!"
"Ryan, please!" Chloe wept, falling to her knees and grabbing his trouser leg. "I did it for us! I did it so we could be together! I knew you'd never leave her unless your business failed! I wanted to build our own company!"
"Get your hands off me!" Ryan roared, kicking his leg free with terrifying force. "Get out! Get out of my house!"
"Ryan!" Chloe sobbed on the floor.
"Marcus!" Ryan screamed for his head of security. Two large guards immediately entered the room. "Escort Miss Grant off the property! Call the police and hand her over to the federal authorities!"
"No! Ryan! Please! I love you!" Chloe screamed as the guards lifted her up by her arms and dragged her, kicking and crying, out of the estate.
The sound of her cries faded down the grand hallway, followed by the heavy slam of the front doors.
Silence returned to the room.
Ryan stood frozen in the middle of the carpet, breathing heavily, completely shattered. He slowly turned around to look at me.
"Michelle..." he whimpered, taking a hesitant step toward me, tears finally spilling from his eyes. "My God... Michelle, I was so blind... She manipulated me... She set me up..."
I looked at him—a broken man standing in the ruins of his own arrogance.
"She didn't manipulate your character, Ryan," I said softly, my voice devoid of any anger, leaving only cold pity. "She just took advantage of your ego. You let her in because you loved having someone worship you. And it cost you everything."
I turned to Diane, kissing her softly on the cheek. "Goodbye, Diane. Please take care of yourself."
"Michelle, wait!" Ryan begged, dropping to his knees on the carpet, reaching out to grab the hem of my coat. "Please! I'll fix this! I'll fire her, I'll give you full control of Hale Dynamics! I'll do whatever you want! Just come back to me! Please don't leave me!"
I stopped, looking down at my ex-husband kneeling on the floor where he had knelt in front of another woman six nights ago.

"I gave you my heart on our wedding night, Ryan," I said softly. "You threw it away for a thief. Now, get off your knees. You have a shareholder meeting to attend."
I walked out of the Chestnut Hill estate for the last time, leaving Ryan Hale weeping alone on the floor.
