Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

While Caden sat in the dim light of the ultrasound room, watching the flickering grayscale monitor as his daughter’s tiny heart beat at 145 beats per minute, Eleanor Aldridge was enacting her final desperate play.
Inside her Gold Coast mansion, Eleanor met with her senior estate lawyers and a disgraced former investigator named Vance Miller.
"Caden has surrendered," Eleanor spat, pacing in front of her marble fireplace. "He gave the federal prosecutors the offshore routing keys. By next month, the government will seize the Aldridge Capital master accounts. Decades of work... ruined by my son's pathetic weakness!"
"Mrs. Aldridge," Miller spoke up, his voice raspy. "If Caden cooperates with the federal government, he might receive probation. But you... your signature appears on the original 2018 transfers from the Swiss accounts."
Eleanor’s eyes narrowed into slits. "I am sixty-six years old. I will not die in a federal penitentiary."
"What do you propose?" her lawyer asked cautiously.
"Raina is the sole controller of the Vance Trust," Eleanor said, turning around with an expression of cold, unyielding malice. "The prosecution's civil case hinges on the audit requested by the Vance Trust. If Raina withdraws the trust’s status as a complaining witness, the federal prosecutors lose their primary jurisdictional standing to seize the private assets."
"Raina will never drop the complaint," Miller noted. "She hates you, and she has no reason to protect the family."
"Every woman has a weakness," Eleanor murmured, walking over to her desk and picking up a silver fountain pen. "Raina’s weakness is her foolish, bleeding heart. She thinks she’s saving Caden. Let’s see how much she’s willing to sacrifice when her own past comes to light."
That evening, a national tabloid news outlet published an explosive online story:
"HERITAGE OF DECEIT: MATERNITY HEIR RAINA VANCE ACCUSED OF CORPORATE CONSPIRACY AND HIDDEN ASSETS."
The article, planted entirely by Eleanor’s publicists, alleged that Raina had married Caden under false pretenses, hiding her true corporate identity for seven years to execute a pre-planned hostile takeover of Aldridge Capital. It portrayed her not as a betrayed wife, but as a cold, calculating blackmailer who had manipulated her pregnancy to gain public sympathy.
The story went viral on social media platforms within hours, trending across Facebook and Twitter. Comment sections were flooded with heated debates.
Raina sat in her Evanston apartment, watching the news ticker scroll across her television screen.
Her hands were steady. Three weeks ago, this would have destroyed her. She would have wept, hidden, and wondered what she had done wrong.
Now, she felt nothing but a quiet, sharp clarity.
Her phone rang. It was Caden.
"Raina, don't look at the news," Caden said urgently the moment she answered. "It’s my mother. She paid The Daily Mail and two online syndicates to run that story. I'm going to her house right now to stop this—"
"Don't bother, Caden," Raina said calmly, looking out at the dark waters of Lake Michigan.
"Raina, she’s trying to tear down your reputation so the board will question your credibility!"
"Let her try," Raina said softly. "A house built on lies always burns from the inside, Caden. Your mother is just striking the last match."

"What are you going to do?" Caden asked, his voice filled with genuine concern.
"I’m going to host a press conference tomorrow morning," Raina replied. "At the hospital."
