Chapter 10 - LOSSLESS

December in Chicago brought the first heavy snowfall of the year, blanketing the city in a pristine, silent white blanket.

Inside the cozy confines of Whitmore & Associates, the radiator hummed softly, blending with the gentle jazz playing from a vintage stereo speaker in the corner.

Clara sat at her desk, finishing the final digital audit report for a complex acoustic restoration case. Her laptop displayed a clean, unbroken audio waveform stretching smoothly across the screen.

She leaned back in her ergonomic chair, stretching her arms above her head and letting out a long, relaxed sigh.

The past year felt like a lifetime. The betrayal, the courtroom battles, the public exposure of Voss Capital—all of it had melted away into the quiet rhythm of a life built entirely on her own terms.

The door chimed.

Julian walked in, shaking the light snow off his wool coat and carrying two steaming paper cups of peppermint mocha from the coffee shop down the street.

“Delivery for the chief forensic scientist,” he smiled, setting a cup on her desk before leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss to her temple.

“You’re spoiling me,” Clara murmured, wrapping her hand around the warm paper cup.

“It’s required under Section 4 of our unwritten partnership agreement,” Julian replied, pulling up a chair beside her desk. “Speaking of which... what are your plans for the weekend? The architectural guild is hosting a holiday dinner downtown, and I need a date who knows how to spot structural flaws in hotel ballrooms.”

Clara laughed, turning her chair to face him. “Only if we check the exit routes first and make sure the sound system doesn’t use cheap wireless mics.”

“Deal,” Julian smiled, taking her hand in his. His grip was warm, firm, and completely safe—the exact opposite of every ghost from her past.

Clara looked down at her hand resting in his, noticing the simple silver ring she wore on her right hand—a gift she had bought herself on the day the federal indictments against Adrien were finalized. It wasn't a symbol of a contract, or a trap, or a desperate deadline. It was a symbol of survival.

She looked up at the waveform glowing softly on her computer monitor.

No distortion. No background noise. Pure, unadulterated truth.

“Happy, Clara?” Julian asked softly, reading the peaceful expression on her face.

May you like

Clara squeezed his hand, her heart swelling with absolute clarity.

“Completely,” she whispered. “Lossless.”
