Chapter 6 - The Fall of Carter Construction

By Thursday morning, Linda was sitting in a holding cell at the county detention center, unable to post bail because her personal funds were legally frozen by Marcus Sterling’s emergency court injunction.

Meanwhile, Daniel’s world had officially collapsed.

With the viral video of the baby shower surpassing two million views across various social platforms, Carter Construction had become a pariah. Subcontractors refused to step onto Daniel’s job sites for fear of not getting paid. The local business council revoked his membership.

At 11:00 AM, my assistant notified me that Daniel was waiting outside the front pedestrian gate of Oakridge on foot. He had walked three miles in the blistering summer heat because his leased Mercedes had been repossessed that morning due to missed corporate lease payments.

I agreed to see him—not in the house, but at the gatehouse, with Arthur standing just outside the door.

When Daniel walked in, he looked like a broken shell of the man I had married. His clothes were soaked in sweat, his shoes were covered in dust, and his eyes were sunken and bloodshot.

“Emma,” he rasped, collapsing onto a wooden chair. “Please. I’m begging you. I have nothing left.”

I sat opposite him across the desk, looking clean, composed, and radiant in a white linen sundress.

“You had everything, Daniel,” I answered. “You had a wife who loved you, a beautiful home, financial security, and a daughter on the way. You threw all of it away for a woman who has spent your entire life turning you into her personal servant.”

“She’s my mother!” Daniel wept, burying his face in his trembling hands. “What was I supposed to do? She raised me alone after my father walked out! She told me every single day that I owed her my life!”

“And so you decided to pay that debt using my soul and my money?” I countered sharply. “Did you think I wouldn't find out about the four hundred and twenty thousand dollars you stole from our accounts?”

Daniel’s head snapped up. His eyes widened in sheer, naked terror. “You... you know about that?”

“Marcus and Julian have every single bank statement, Daniel. Every wire transfer to ‘L.C. Heritage Holdings.’ Every fake invoice for nonexistent drywall and concrete. You didn't just fail as a husband; you committed federal bank fraud.”

Daniel slid out of the chair and dropped to his knees on the tiled floor. He reached out, trying to grab the hem of my dress, but Arthur stepped into the room, and Daniel shrank back.

“Emma, please don’t send me to prison,” he sobbed, his voice cracking into high-pitched whimpers. “I’ll sign whatever you want. I’ll give up my claim to the business. I’ll sign away my rights to everything. Just please... tell Marcus to drop the criminal charges. My mother is losing her mind in that cell, and they’re talking about indicting me as a co-conspirator!”

I looked down at the man I had spent four years trying to save. I felt no anger. I felt no hatred. I only felt a profound, overwhelming sense of relief that my daughter would never have to grow up under his cowardly shadow.

“You want mercy, Daniel?” I asked quietly.

“Yes! Anything! Please!”

“Then here are my terms,” I said, sliding a document across the desk. “You sign full, unconditional legal and physical custody of our unborn child over to me. You agree to zero visitation until she turns eighteen, unless she independently requests to meet you. You sign over your remaining fifty-one percent of Carter Construction to the Montgomery Trust to liquidate and repay the stolen funds. And you sign an affidavit detailing every single dollar your mother forced you to embezzle.”

Daniel looked at the paper, his hands shaking violently. “If I sign this... Linda will go to prison for years.”

“Linda is going to prison regardless,” I said coldly. “The only question is whether you are going to sit in the cell right next to her.”

Daniel looked at the pen on the desk. He hesitated for five agonizing seconds.

In the end, true to his nature, the coward chose his own survival over the woman who had birthed him.

He picked up the pen and signed his name on the dotted line.
