Chapter 7 - The Final Trap Springs

At two o’clock in the morning, Gero Kranz sat in his luxury SUV parked on a deserted forest road near Bad Orb, ten miles from his family's private hunting lodge.

He stared anxiously at his burner phone, drumming his fingers against the leather steering wheel. The heater hummed softly, but a cold, nervous sweat soaked through his cashmere sweater. Why hadn't they called? They were supposed to secure Beate forty minutes ago.

Suddenly, the phone buzzed on the passenger seat.

Gero snatched it up, pressing it to his ear. "Did you get her? Is she in the van?"

"Mr. Kranz?" a rough voice said, panting slightly. "We... we had complications. The old man fought back. But we have her. We’re at the hunting lodge. She’s locked in the master bedroom. You need to come now and sign off on the transfer before we leave the country."

A vicious, triumphant laugh escaped Gero’s throat. "I knew it! The old bastard was all talk! I’m three minutes away. Don't let her speak. Don't give her water until she signs the affidavit!"

Gero threw the phone onto the seat, slammed the SUV into gear, and sped through the winding, snow-dusted mountain road. His heart soared with manic exhilaration. He had won. He would force her to sign a sworn statement admitting that she had fabricated the video using deepfake software out of spite. He would reclaim his partnership. He would regain his status. He would be untouchable.

He pulled up to the rustic, dark-timbered hunting lodge nestled deep in the pines. The windows were pitch black, save for a single light glowing on the upper floor.

Gero grabbed a leather folder containing the pre-written recantation papers, stepped out of the vehicle, and marched up the wooden porch steps. He didn't even bother to knock; he pushed the heavy oak door open and stroged inside.

"Where is she?" Gero called out, his voice echoing through the vaulted, antler-adorned living room. "Beate! Come out here right now, you ungrateful—"

*CLACK-CLACK.*

The mechanical sound of a shotgun chambering a round cut through the silence.

The sudden glare of four industrial floodlights mounted on the walls snapped on, blinding Gero completely. He threw his arms up to shield his eyes, stumbling backward against the door.

"Stand perfectly still, Gero," a cold, familiar voice commanded.

As his vision cleared, Gero’s stomach dropped into a bottomless pit of ice.

Standing in the center of the lodge was not his hired muscle.

Standing there was Thomas Brand, flanked by eight heavily armed tactical officers of the Hesse State Police Special Operations Unit (SEK), their submachine guns leveled at Gero’s chest. To the left stood Detective Sarah Brenner, holding an open evidence bag.

"W-what is this?" Gero stammered, his knees trembling so violently he could barely remain upright. "Where are the men I hired? Where is Beate?!"

"Your mercenaries are currently in holding cells at the Frankfurt central precinct, singing like canaries," Detective Brenner said, stepping forward with a warrant in her hand. "They traded your burner phone, your audio recordings, and your bank transfer receipts for a reduced sentence on conspiracy to commit aggravated kidnapping."

"No... no, this is an ambush! This is entrapment!" Gero shrieked, backing toward the door, reaching desperately for the brass handle.

"Don't move!" an SEK officer barked, the red laser dot of his rifle snapping directly onto Gero’s forehead.

Thomas stepped forward slowly, the heavy thud of his boots echoing like a death knell on the hardwood floor. He stopped two feet from Gero. Up close, Thomas seemed ten feet tall, an immovable mountain of righteous retribution.

"You violated your bail conditions," Thomas said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "You orchestrated an armed home invasion. You attempted to abduct my daughter and my unborn grandchild. You are not going back to your penthouse, Gero. You are not seeing a private judge. You are going to a maximum-security remand facility, and you will stay there until the day you are sentenced."

Gero’s face contorted into a mask of pathetic, sniveling despair. He dropped the leather folder; the papers scattered across the floor like dead leaves.

"Thomas... please," Gero begged, tears streaming down his face, his aristocratic pride evaporating into thin air. "It was a mistake! I love her! I love Beate! I was just trying to save our family! Talk to her! Tell her I’ll pay for whatever she wants! Ten million euros! I’ll leave the country! Just let me go!"

Thomas looked down at him with an expression of profound, unadulterated disgust.

"A man who beats a pregnant woman does not know love," Thomas said. "You know only vanity and fear. And starting tonight, fear is all you have left."

Brenner stepped in, spun Gero around with brutal efficiency, and forced him to his knees. The heavy steel handcuffs snapped around his wrists once more, pinching the skin until he cried out in pain.

May you like

As they dragged him out into the freezing mountain air, Gero looked back at Thomas, his eyes wide and hollow. He wasn't the golden boy of Frankfurt anymore. He was a broken predator, headed for a cage.
