Chapter 3 - The Notice of Unlawful Detainer

By Friday afternoon, Thornwood Terrace was engulfed in chaotic, frantic energy.

Eleanor was in the sprawling kitchen, surrounded by half-unpacked boxes of cheaper, supermarket-grade catering platters. Her hair, usually sprayed into an immaculate, rigid silver-blonde coif, was slightly disheveled. Her face was flushed with a mixture of profound irritation and frantic denial.

"What do you mean the balance is zero?!" Eleanor screamed into her phone, pacing across the imported Italian tile. "I have an unlimited commercial revolving line! Julian Vance set this facility up himself! Check the system again, you incompetent idiot!"

On the other end of the line, the tier-three representative of the private banking division remained maddeningly calm. *"Mrs. Vance, as we informed you yesterday, the master guarantor on the account has exercised administrative revocation rights under Section 9 of the primary trust instrument. The account is permanently closed. There are no available funds, no credit facilities, and no overdraft protections associated with your identity."*

"I am Mrs. Julian Vance!" she shrieked. "I am his widow!"

*"The documentation on file lists Nora Vance as the sole surviving executor and principal beneficiary,"* the voice replied mechanically. *"If you wish to dispute this status, you must submit a formal petition through the probate division. Have a pleasant afternoon."*

The line went dead.

Eleanor hurled the cordless phone against the wall. It shattered into three pieces, skittering across the floor and striking the baseboards.

"Mom!" Violet wailed, stomping into the kitchen in her socks, holding a curling iron. "The water pressure in the upstairs bathroom is barely a trickle! And half the outlets in the master bedroom aren't working! The circuit breakers keep tripping! How am I supposed to get ready for Carter’s family? They’re going to be here in less than twenty-four hours!"

Violet’s eyes were rimmed with dark circles from a sleepless night of panic and rage. She had spent the entire morning fielding calls from her influencer agency, demanding to know why her sponsored corporate accounts had been flagged for administrative identity review.

"Shut up! Just shut up about your hair for one second!" Eleanor snapped, pressing her palms against her temples. "Nora did this. That little, ungrateful snake did something to the bank accounts before she ran away. She’s trying to starve us out. She thinks she can cut off my money and force me to beg!"

"Then call the police!" Violet screamed. "She left us with no money, no car keys, and half the house doesn't even work! Carter’s mother is coming here! If Beatrice Hayes walks into this house and sees cheap grocery store platters and cold water, she will never let Carter propose! She’ll think we’re frauds!"

"We are not frauds!" Eleanor hissed, her voice vibrating with venomous pride. "I spent seven years playing nursemaid to that dying old man! I gave up my prime years wiping his chin and listening to him cough his lungs out! Everything in this house belongs to me! Everything he owned is mine by right! Nora was just an accident of birth! A quiet, pathetic little mouse who couldn't even stand up to me when I threw that soup in her face!"

*Ding-dong.*

The heavy chimes of the front doorbell echoed through the vaulted ceilings of the mansion.

Violet gasped, her hands flying to her face. "Is that Carter? He’s not supposed to be here until tomorrow!"

"Go check the security monitor," Eleanor ordered, quickly smoothing her cardigan and trying to compose her face.

Violet hurried into the foyer, looking at the wall-mounted screen. "It’s not Carter. It’s some guy in a cheap suit holding a clipboard and a leather envelope. He’s standing by a city courier car."

Eleanor scoffed, a look of profound arrogance returning to her features. "It’s probably an apology letter from the bank’s district manager. They finally realized their system made a catastrophic error and they’re sending a courier to deliver new cards."

Eleanor marched to the front door, unlocked the freshly drilled, shiny new deadbolt, and pulled the heavy door open with a dramatic flourish.

"It’s about time," Eleanor declared imperiously. "I have been waiting for this resolution all morning. If this does not contain a full written apology from your regional vice president, I will—"

"Are you Eleanor Vance?" the man interrupted, completely unmoved by her aristocratic glare.

"I am Mrs. Vance, yes."

"And is Violet Sterling currently residing on these premises?"

Violet poked her head around the doorframe. "I'm Violet. Why? Did the Saint Laurent boutique send my packages here?"

The courier didn't smile. He reached into his leather envelope and pulled out two thick, legal packets bound with bright red tape and stamped with the unmistakable blue insignia of the County Sheriff’s Department and the State Superior Court.

He slapped the first packet firmly into Eleanor’s hand, and the second into Violet’s chest.

"Eleanor Vance, you are hereby served with a formal Emergency Notice of Unlawful Detainer, an Interim Injunction for Commercial Trespass, and a Temporary Restraining Order pursuant to Case Number 24-CV-8891."

The courier stepped back, pulled out a small digital camera hanging from his neck, and snapped a flash photograph of Eleanor holding the documents.

"You have seventy-two hours to completely vacate the property located at 1442 Thornwood Terrace," the process server recited with absolute, practiced neutrality. "All personal effects belonging exclusively to you must be removed under sheriff supervision. You are barred from coming within five hundred yards of Nora Vance, her workplace, or any asset owned by Vance Holdings. Any attempt to alter, sell, destroy, or encumber property located within this domicile constitutes a Class 3 felony under state asset protection statutes. Have a nice day."

He turned on his heel and walked down the limestone steps toward his idling car.

Eleanor stood frozen on the threshold, staring at the thick stack of papers in her hand. The words *UNLAWFUL DETAINER* and *NOTICE TO VACATE WITHIN 72 HOURS* glared at her in bold, eighty-point black ink.

"What... what is this?" Violet stammered, her fingers shaking as she flipped through the pages of her own packet. "Mom... it says here that Nora owns the deed. It says she’s owned the deed since 2018! It says you don't own any percentage of the house! Mom, what does this mean?!"

"It's a bluff!" Eleanor’s voice cracked, rising into a shrill, hysterical screech that echoed across the quiet, leafy neighborhood. "It’s a forged piece of garbage! That miserable little bitch hired some cheap actor to bring fake papers to my door!"

In a blind, unhinged fury, Eleanor seized the thick legal document in both hands. She tore through the heavy bonded paper, ripping it in half, then into quarters, and threw the shredded pieces violently onto the driveway.

"You see that?!" she screamed at the empty street, her face contorted in madness. "That is what I think of Nora’s pathetic little threats! I am not leaving! This is my house! I will burn this place to the ground before I let that ungrateful whore take one single brick back from me!"

Across the street, perched high in the leafy branches of a massive silver maple, a directional high-gain security camera with an automated digital lens quietly tracked every movement of Eleanor’s meltdown.

The audio sensor recorded every word. The high-resolution lens captured every fluttering piece of the shredded court order.

And three miles away, in a quiet conference room on the thirty-fourth floor of the St. Regis, Marcus Bennett leaned back in his leather chair, clicked his mouse, and smiled.

"Electronic confirmation received," Marcus said quietly. "Service perfected. Destruction of process logged. Detective Miller has just been notified."

I looked out the window, watching the sun begin to dip behind the city skyline, casting long, bloody shadows across the horizon.

"Let the party begin," I said.
